What Does Health Mean to You?

My passion with this site and Origins Health Coaching is health. Changing my eating habits enabled me to gain my health back. I certainly don’t believe I’m as healthy as I could be, but know that I am 100x healthier than I was a year ago. So this got me thinking, what is health to me? Read below about my ideas and comment at the end of this post, I want to know what health means to you!

Definition of Health

This section obviously isn’t explaining my view of health, but we should start with a definition. Plus, I like the way Merriam-Webster defines it. Health is “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit.” Or, as the second definition states, “a condition in which someone or something is thriving or doing well.” Freedom from disease is certainly an aspect of health (and part of Webster’s definition), but not everything. Health encompasses more than that.

Health is Reduced Inflammation

Having rid my diet of inflammatory foods has revolutionized my health. Chronic aches and pains disappeared. Certainly I still deal with some of these aches from time to time, but typically can refer back to some food that caused it. Note my experience with the carnivore diet for that very reason. Inflammation not only leads to chronic pain in your body, but it is also the precursor to disease. In fact, disease is inflammation throughout your body. Losing all of this inflammation in my body is an enormous step towards health for me.

Health is Increased Energy

Health is the ability to keep up with my kids and 80lb German Shepherd. It’s being able to keep up with my delivery drivers at work when I ride with them all day. I have energy unlike any time since my days in high school. Unless I don’t sleep very well at night, I rarely experience the afternoon crash and need of a caffeine pick-up. When the body is running on ketones as opposed to glucose, there aren’t crashes. Instead, you experience steady energy levels all through the day. Now I just enjoy a good cup of decaf coffee in the afternoon so I can enjoy the taste!

Health is Mental Clarity

My brain loves ketones! Rarely do I experience brain fog or lessened alertness. My mind is clear and focused all throughout the day. Rarely do I feel I need the extra fat, but I still enjoy my morning bulletproof coffee both for flavor and the mental boost the MCT’s provide! The brain prefers ketone fuel over sugar. Sugar leaves you foggy and regularly lacking mental clarity. When healthy, your mental sharpness is off the charts.

Health is Fitness

This certainly isn’t the goal of everyone. It never was for me either. Now that I feel good and have energy, I want to be in the best shape that I can be. To me, this is health. I completed my first 5K in nearly 20 years this past June. Now, I’m shooting for a personal best time next year, which is a lofty goal considering I ran sub-17 minute 5K’s in high school. I’m up for the challenge and want to keep up with my soon-to-be teenage son. When you are healthy, you can work towards fitness and athleticism. Those goals are nearly impossible, and a chore, when unhealthy.
